Course description
From an Intimate Circle to a Mass Movement: Hasidism in the 18th Century
The course will deal with the first stages of Hasidism and will examine its emergence and development in light of the political and social conditions in which the 18th century Jewish traditional society in Eastern Europe conducted its life. The course will focus on the first two generations of Hasidism – Israel Ba’al Shem Tov (the Besht; d. 1760) and his circle; and Dov Ber the maggid of Mezritsh (d. 1772) and his disciples. Special attention will be given to discussion on social history questions such as the historical figure of the Bestht; problems of leadership; the expansion of Hasidism and more.
