Course description
Language and Identity: Hebrew, Ladino and Yiddish in the Jewish Press in the Russian and Ottoman Empires
This course examines the emergence on Jewish press in Jewish languages since the mid-19th century until World War I, in multinational empires, where most Jews lived. It shows how the creation of modern Jewish identities were intertwined with the question of language, and the different attempts to shape them, ranging between integration and separation. The course explores the impact of modernization, nationalism, the first experience of democracy, freedom of the press and censorship, and the rise of mass communication in the Russian Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Palestine.
Students will acquire academic research and writing skills by using the Historical Jewish Press website.
Requirements: Participation in class and a short final paper based on contemporary periodicals.
