Course description
The Jewish History of Beuty in The Early Modern Era
What can beauty tell us about history? This course will examine the concepts of beauty in Jewish cultures in the modern period. We will pay special attention to descriptions of beauty and aesthetics offered by rabbis, Kabbalists, Sabbateans, Hasidim, enlighteners, preachers, legal scholars and memoir writers. Through the lens of these descriptions, including their design and structure (and of course what they are lacking), we will seek to investigate one aspect of the course of Jewish history in the modern period.
