Eat Drink Man Woman: The everyday culture of the first Israelis
This course aims at examining the cultural repertoires of Jewish Israelis during Israel’s nascent years. Economic conditions, historic constraints and political development are the set on which everyday practices, social norms and mores will be portrayed and analyzed. We will discuss the role of the state in instilling discipline and social values as well as the role of various cultural agents in inculcating proper practices to the nation. The course proposes a close look at social and material realities vis a vis political rhetoric and national aspirations.
