Course description
The seminar will deal with selected aspects of royal and private cult in the context of the royal administration (where possible). Our topics will concern the biblical reforms be that under the Assyrians, Egyptians and the Achaemenids (canonization of the Pentateuch) and the king-cult under the Greco-Macedonian kingdoms. Paganism and monotheism will be discussed in sociological-historical contexts and so are the material remains and cultural manifestations of cult in the context of the royal administration at the time. Focus will be given on cultic architecture, its derivatives and findings; classes may be supplemented by educational tours to topic-oriented archaeological sites
