Course description

Within the framework of this course we shall discuss the evidence for Greek contact with the Levant in the first half of the first millennium BCE. From geographical point of view, the area under discussion runs from the northern Syria, through the sites of the Land of Israel and down to Egypt. Based on the archaeological evidence and the existing historical sources, we shall try to distinguish between different patterns of Greek presence on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean and Egypt during the Iron Age.
