Course description
Death, maybe the most dramatic event is the lives of an individual and his community, was and is the background on which social, religious and cultural ideals were formed, played out and contested. The course starts at this point and looks at Muslim societies in various periods in order to learn about community, identity, social hierarchy, power struggles, morals and so much more which is part of Muslim realities. The specific case studies focus for example on funerals and graves, death as a literary motif ("dying of love", love fools), martyrdom, madness as a social death, euthanasia, etc.
