Course description

The course will deal with two of the basic components of the classical and new-classical Arabic poetry: meter and rhetoric. At the first part of the course the theory of Arabic prosody coined by al-Khalil bin Ahmad (718-786) will be presented, with a special discussion of its rational, roots, concepts and components. The students shall be exposed to the 16 formal meters of the Arabic poetry. They shall learn how to analyze the Arabic meters of the poetry. Among others, the course shall deal with the various types of rhymes that the Arab scholars discussed. The second part of the course is dedicated to the science of rhetoric and its development along the time. The course will discuss basic rhetoric issues that interested the Arab scholars with special emphasis on the approaches of: Ibn al-Mu’taz (861-909), Abo Hilal al-Askari (920-1005), Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani (1010-1078), Ibn al-Athir (1239-1163), Hazim al-Qartajani (1211-1285).
