Course description
The Life and Works of Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba
This course deals with the life and works of the well-known writer, theologian and legal scholar Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba (d. 456/1064), who is regarded as one of the most important thinkers in the history of al-Andalus. Ibn Hazm, who belonged to the Zahiri madhhab, attacked most of the legal schools and theological currents in Islam, as well as other religions, especially Judaism and Christianity. The texts read during this course include biographical sketches by admirers and detractors, autobiographical passages, and extensive sections from Ibn Ḥazm's writings in the fields of theology, law, political theory, ethics etc.
Mandatory class attendance and active participation contribute to 40% of the final grade. In addition to various assignments (20%), students are required to write a final seminar paper (ca. 25 pages) or a "referat" (ca. 15 pages): 40%.
