Course description
MA/BA Course
CURRENT SYNTAX
The course will present the major developments that have taken place within
syntactic theory since the GB theory of the early 1980s.
The topics to be discussed in detail will include clause structure, functional
categories, secondary predication, the licensing of PRO, D(eterminer)Phrase
and the structure of nominals, VP-shells, Reflexivity vs. binding of anaphors and pronominals. The course lays the foundation for doing research in current syntactic theory, and for the minimalist program framework.
Course requirements: Regular attendance and class participation, occasional
homework assignments and a final take-home exam.
