The course will discuss the modern and contemporary English-speaking tradition of war writing and documentation in the century between the First World War and current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. While much of the course will deal with the ongoing tradition of war poetry and soldier poetry, discussion will also include other aspects of the American wartime literary cannon, such as short stories, newspaper writing, and film, both feature and documentary. Discussion will focus both on the role of war and war writing in establishing and undermining mainstream American culture, as well as the manner with which the literary works bear the marks of the effect of violence and the fear of death on participating individuals. Writers to be discussed include: Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, e. e. Cummings, J. D. Salinger, Randall Jarrell, Simone Weil, H.D., Maurice Blanchot, Susan Sontag, as well as contemporary poems and newspaper articles.
