Course description
During our study we will focus in analyzing different patterns of women's struggle to shape their identity in various societies in the Middle East and Africa during the twentieth century. The analysis will focus in periods of independence wars and beyond- during the creation of the national polity and the consolidation of its gender identity. We will survey the writings of historians, sociologists, fiction writers and feminist activists. During the semester we will also watch and analyze documentary movies and features films.
