Course description
This course will analyze the political, social and economic developments in the three core North African states (Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) during the last two hundred years. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between indigenous factors and French colonial rule in the shaping of modern national identities and political communities. The second half of the course will focus on the successes and shortcomings of a half-century of independent statehood, leading up to the upheavals of the last five years. Documentary and feature films will be employed as a teaching tool.
