Course description
The seminar will examine the emergence of the machine as the symbol of both modern culture and the industrial economy. Readings will be based on the relevant scholarly literature as well as primary sources. Subject include: energy sources, standardization, transportation, urbanization, techniques of control and command, the invention of the assembly line, photography, statistics, armaments, and Frankenstein
