Course description
The question at the focus of this seminar is how present day philosophy relates to itself and to its history. We will discuss various contemporary perspectives on the issue, with special emphasis on questions such as, for example, what is philosophy and what are its goals; to what extent is philosophy an independent discipline?; does philosophy have a special subject-matter of its own?; Can philosophy have a therapeutic value? Is philosophy a purely theoretical and contemplative activity or is it also a form of praxis? To what extent should philosophy be considered an independent discipline? Is there any philosophical progress? What kind of relations exist between philosophy and the conduct of life?
The first meeting of the seminar introduces students to these and other related questions and provides them with a recommended bibliographical list. Students are required to choose one of these questions and write a paper progressively, under personal guidance.

Attendance in the seminar’s first meeting is mandatory.
