Course description
The Stoics claimed that the wise man lives in accordance with nature. What is the meaning of this claim, its implications and how is it possible to achieve this end? In order to answer these questions, we will examine how ‘living in accord with nature’ relates to topics in natural philosophy, theology, metaphysics as well as in ethics. We will discuss the Stoics’ conception of happiness, virtue and rationality, their definition of nature and the natural world. We will also study the main tenets of their theory of knowledge. The course will also focus how to approach and read the different sources of the Hellenistic Stoa and how to deal with fragments.
