Course description
The seminar will center on the problem of the relationship between the experience of pain and the possibility or impossibility of its expression. We will discuss the concept “expression” standing at the midst of both language and pain and think about the difference between physical expression and linguistic expression, asking for instance, what is the relation between the scream of pain and the word “pain”. We will discuss the relationship between pain and vocal expression on the one hand, and pain and its expression in writing or image on the other. The seminar will be devoted to the phenomenology of the experience of pain, the different problems inherent to the possibility of its expression (private language argument, the problem of other minds, etc.), and finally, will touch on these questions in the aesthetic realm, inquiring into visual and literary works of art dealing with pain.
