Course description
This course will try to follow the dialogue in between Shakespeare and Philosophy and, in doing so, will frame the Shakespearian philosophical suggestion as a radical option to the empiricists and rationalists’ thought, as formulated by Shakespeare's contemporaries - Francis Bacon and Descartes.
We will examine the ever-growing philosophical interest in Shakespeare's work in the last 200 years through the integration of his ideas into philosophy. We will read excerpts from texts written by Shakespeare, including The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar and The Winter’s Tale; we will also look into Benjamin's, Cavell's and Derrida's readings of Shakespeare.
