Course description
The course will be devoted to the philosophy of “Enlightenment.” In its first part, we will discuss different definitions of the term “Enlightenment,” the relationship between enlightenment and rationality, enlightenment and religion, etc. In the second part of the course, we will discuss the different critiques of the enlightenment, mainly in the context of Isaiah Berlin’s famous discussion of the “Counter-Enlightenment.” Among the authors we will discuss: Descartes, Kant, Rousseau, Berlin, Herder, Hamann, Adorno and Foucault.
