Dr. Rotem Preger Wagner
class

The course will deal with the emergence of child image and the concept of childhood in the Hebrew fiction of the 19th century. We will trace the development of literary representations of children and childhood in Hebrew prose, and their relations with new concepts of children and childhood that germinated at the beginning of the modern period in European literature and thought. The appearance of childhood in fiction will be examined in association with the development of various genres of personal writing in Hebrew - autobiographies and memoirs. We will focus on reading primary texts accompanied by recent research works dealing with childhood in European, Jewish and Hebrew culture.
