Course description
Textbooks as cultural agents
Dr. Tal Kogman

Textbooks are essential sources for studying children and youth culture, and for exploring goals of education systems, their ideals and methods. The wide distribution of textbooks makes them into powerful cultural agents. Textbooks for children and youth first appeared in Central Europe in the 16th century. The rise of modern school and of national education systems in the 19th century led to a growth of their impact. In the course, we will examine various test cases, in order to explore the complex cultural functions of this corpus.
