Course description
The course will analyze Moliere’s plays, from the first simple farces to the great sophisticated comedies. We will deal with his life as an actor and company manager and with his relationship with the public and with the authorities. We will focus on the social and religious criticism in his works, on his perception and treatment of women in French society and on his non-compliance with the rules of classic dramaturgy. The plays will be considered within the historical and social context in which they were written and performed. The lectures will be illustrated with films and students will be asked to present and read some of the dialogues.
