Course description
The course focuses on the basic principles of soil formation in general and of Israel's soil in particular. The global definition of soil amongst other earth components will be examined. Soil formation factors – climate, parent, material, organic matter, time and topography – will be discussed. The course will provide the basic background on field and laboratory methods for soil characterization and will focus on field work for soil surveying. Soil organic matter, mechanical composition, lime content and color will be studied in detail. The course will expose the world soil arena and deal with soil identification, definition and taxonomy. Anthropogenic problems regarding soil properties will also be studied. Students will participate in several field trips to experience, from practical point of view, the soil body, it origin, development and influence on the surrounding environment.

Prerequisite:
Introduction to Geology, Introduction to Geomorphology.

Grade:
Exercises: 10%
Final report on the field trip: 10%
Final exam: 80%.
