This course focuses on representations of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people in contempoary communications: magazines and printed media, television, cinema, popular music and the Internet. We will discuss the mechanisms of distantiation, exclusion, inclusion and cooptation of sexual minorities by the media industry; the rise of the independent New Queer Cinema; the media construction of themuscular male physique outside and inside the gay community; the increasedpopularity of gay characters in TV series; masquerade and exploration of (homo)sexualities in popular music; the rise of virtual gay communities andcommunal dating websites, and their social effect etc.
