Course description
The concept of the ego is a constitutive concept of thinking about human being in modern thought. It is central to Descartes' thought, rejected by Hume and reinterpreted by Kant. Nietzsche negates it as a misleading concept and after him the existentialists and postmodern thinkers, yet Husserl and Freud emphasize its importance and elaborate it, each of them in his way. We will examine some of the central views concerning this concept in modern thought for understanding its influence on the philosophical discussion about human being.
