The Legal Status of the Arab Minority in Israel - Mr Hassan Jabareen
The course will discuss the legal status of the Arab minority in the Israeli law while referring to the un-going tension between the rights of Arab citizens and Israe'l "security" and its definition as a "Jewish" State. The discussion will also be based on critical legal theory as well as international norms related to the status and rights of minorities. Moreover, the course will examine and analyze the following issues: the creation of a national minority in 1948; the impact of the Nakba on both the legal status and the national identity of the Arab minority; cultural rights and the status of the Arabic language; gender and nationalism; political and civil rights; citizenship and demography; confiscation of land and property including absentee property; unrecognized villages and Internal displaced persons; economic and social rights; October 2000 events and the implementation of the recommendation and conclusions of the Official Commission (The Or Commission) and discussion of the Future Vision documents while referring to the public critique against them.
