Course description
For a long period, the motor cortex has been considered a relatively simple system, in charge of connecting higher cognitive systems with muscles and effectors. In recent years this has changed following behavioral and physiological findings. Brain regions previously considered purely motor have been found to be engaged in sensory perception and cognitive functions. During the course we will overview the anatomical structure of the motor system and its role in cognitive functions such as imagery, learning by observation, imitation and voluntary action. We will also discuss the implications of various pathologies and see how one can exploit neural activity in motor regions to develop brain-machine interfaces.
