Course description
The interface of culture and psychology will be explored through the following three clusters: a. Basic orientations: cultural relativism and the limits of psychological knowledge; conceptualizing the connections between subjective experiences and cultural symbols, and between the personal-biographical level and the social and collective level. b. The cultural construction of basic categories such as person, self and emotions interface of madness and culture. c. Mental distress and mental health in cultural perspective. The phenomenon of spirit possession, recurring in many cultural settings and combining religious-ceremonial, psychological and psychiatric dimensions, will constitute a major axis around which the major issues discussed in this class will be explored.
