This course explores the museum as a cultural institution, and the role of its collections in today’s society. We will learn on different types of museums in Israel—historical museums, natural history museums, science museums, art museums (also cultural-specific), etc. As the split between these categories begins to dissolve (artifacts from historical or natural museums are exhibited in art shows, and vice versa), it is of utmost importance that students will learn about these traditional disciplinary definitions. We will learn about the conceptualization process of a museum’s vision, what it entails, how to realize it and evaluate it. Students will also learn about museum administration and collection care: the Israeli law of museums, collection maintenance, museum lighting, conservation challenges and practices.
