Course description

The seminar will concentrate on three main issues related to the architectural knowledge: how does architectural archival knowledge is being generated, what is the significance of collecting and cataloguing this knowledge, and what are the museal ways and significance of its display. In order to discuss these questions, the seminar will refer to the Ram Karmi collection that is archived in the Azrieli Architectural Archive as a case study. The seminar assumes that with the emergence of architectural archives all over the world, the architectural knowledge gained additional dimensions. Large number of collections are awaiting processing and cataloguing. Moreover, the number of architectural exhibitions displayed in leading museums all over the world increased dramatically in the last years. How do we have to relate to this phenomenon, then?

Referring to the Ram Karmi collection, the seminar will delve into and seek to better understand issues related to this collection. Among other issues, we will address Ram Karmi’s brutalist and lyric architecture. Additionally, we will meet curators from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and will visit exhibitions that they curated in order to study curation methodologies and understand the ways in which they mediated visual material to the general public.

The seminar is part of the preparation of a big and retrospective exhibition on Ram Karmi. The seminar will also delve into questions related to this exhibition.

Prof. Maristella Casciato, Senior Curator of Architectural Collections, will lecture in one of the seminar’s meetings.
