In Western thought, landscaping has been assigned a subservient position to architecture, as background to the architectural figure. But the relationships between two have been much more complex, with shifting hierarchies and complex interactions between the two disciplines; in fact, one of the major theoretical shifts of our time is the overcoming of the binary opposition between the two fields, towards what Krauss has defined as ‘expanded fields’ such as ‘landscape urbanism.’

The course will explore key concepts and approaches to the interpretation of landscape, with special emphasis on the present pervasive role of space and landscape as metaphors for imagining the condition of globalization.
