Course description

In the three decades, the virtual dimension is integrated in the physical realm more than ever. One may think of smartphone, portable computers, automatic cars to witness the influence of the virtual dimension on the physical realm. Beyond that, with the evolution of augmented reality, the physical and the virtual are integrated even to a greater extent.

In the last few years, the digital studio at the Azrieli School of Architecture explored the relationship between the physical and the virtual dimensions. That is through abstract exercises that resulted in full scale installations. This year the studio seeks to explore the relationship between the physical and virtual realms in concrete architectural functions, such as, working places, domestic spaces and other living environments. The students will be asked to explore these possibilities and develop new conditions for selected case studies.

The students’ body will be divided into working groups, each will be constituted of 3-4 students that will be asked to construct a full-scale installation.

In order to enhance the knowledge and experience of the students, the studio will travel to Los Angeles and will visit animation studios and architectural offices dealing with the relationship between the virtual and physical realms. Among others, we will visit Imaginary Forces, Disney Imagineering Research, Gehry Architects, Greg Lynn Architects and more.
