Course description
Tel Aviv in particular and the State of Israel in general, are facing a fascinating planning period: In this period, the second urban layer is increasingly formed in the city and in the country. The first layer was established in many cases, by large targeted institutional hand, relied on ideology and vision, dictated directly by the young Israeli establishment. The second layer, embroidered by a variety of urban renewal projects undertaken mostly by the private sector and driven by an entirely different set of values .
In this studio, we will try to understand and portray the relationship between ideology, communal program, the urban scheme, urban space design and architectural detail. During this process, we will examine the human connection to the urban vision and architectural solutions, through direct contact with local residents and their ongoing feedback.
We will focus on several sites in Tel Aviv`s neighborhoods located in the south, east and north of the city. These regions, like many neighborhoods across the country, have been established in a very short period in order to accumulate the fast growing country`s population. Imported generic modern urban concepts outlined the urban patterns, regardless of the intended habitants and the changing urban connections.
In these sites we will examine the current situation in some known analytic tools, including physical and communal tools, and we will also develop personal perspectives for each team, which will try to draw a profile of each region. We will also deal with several issues such as development versus conservation, community work and the creation of urban solutions that result from ideological conception.
The planning process and outcomes will be examined by critical and creative implementation of objectives defined and used during the process in architecture and urban tools.
