Course description

The invisible cities exist but do not exist but very much exist within ourselves. They are made of legends, asphalt, desires, anxiety. They are the mold of their inhabitants and maybe their inhabitants are the mold of them?

During the semester, each group will choose a city out of the cities described in the book and will import it into the smart cities of the 21st century.  There, we will face the conflicts that emerge out of the possibly existing, possibly imagined (or criticized) cities of Calvino and the reality of actual space, technology, culture and society.

Into the mold of the chosen city, we will pour concrete urban contents which will face questions and situations that will emerge out of choosing this unique city.

During the semester we will be engaged in urban design founding our work on the connection between ideas and planning ideology, to their implementation in the planning process. The planning will be supported by theories and arguments. The work in the studio will focus on personal expression and independent thinking of the students while basing their decisions on a coherent set of considerations. The development of the projects is based on the personal agendas of each groups and its ability to present a coherent project, while the responsibility of the tutors is both to support these agendas and challenge them on the other.
