Course description

The program for Urban Design studio 5 in 3rd-4th year, will be based upon knowledge acquired over the past academic years, offering an opportunity for in depth studies related to the wider urban context. In this year, processes of analysis and planning will be developed, while dealing with the design of the urban environment. The studies will be in groups of three.

During the studies, emphasis will be put to the connection between the factors which generate a planning idea, and the ways in which to implement that idea.  A critical observation on the environment will include the analysis of the broad and the immediate area. It will also be supported by reading materials, giving special attention to various urban design theories and viewpoints, and former theoretical studies. The work in the studio will aim for personal expression, independent thinking and to formulize a well-based, reasoned set of values.

The work in the studio will include studies of the area and its urban context, historic significance, population demographics, land and building uses – existing or lacking, transportation (or better said –movement) and more. Further on, each group will focus on a problem, an opportunity or a conflict that has been identified, and will offer a planning solution, based on an ideology that will be presented by the group.

The project will be planned in appropriate urban scales.

One or two intermediate presentations will take place during the semester, after which each group will have an evaluation of their achievements and recommendations for further progress. In these presentations invited guests will be present to review the work.

The final presentation will take place at the end of the semester, with invited guests.
