Course description

The studio will focus on the design of a group of dwelling units in an urban context. It will try to understand the connection between the basic human activities done in one's personal living space and the connection of that space to the city at large. The studio is an introduction to the design process using different practicing methods including group discussion, analysis methods, personal and group critique.

The studio will also focus on the complex relationship between Architecture and culture and the understanding that the architecture practice is intellectual in essence and must follow a structured thinking process, based upon the design concept.

In order to design one must learn to use different tools: some of the tools are technical and are connected to the existing conventions of representation (2D and 3D). Others can be borrowed from disciplines other than architecture, and used in the design process to create a unique design method.

The studio aspires to demonstrate that there is a deep connection  between the actions a person takes in his/her personal living space and the surrounding urban environment.  The design than, of any urban dwelling, should be much wider than the building itself.
