This course provides an overview of the history of the built environment from the rise of Christianity to the 17th century. We will explore various architectural styles and urban patterns that emerged in different areas of the world, including Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Attention will be given to both canonical monuments as well as to less celebrated examples, such as housing and everyday spaces. Over the course of the semester, we will explore the interconnections between the built environment on the one hand and religious, political, economic and social structures on the other. The course will be taught in English.
