The objective of this course is to provide you with basic knowledge of the architectural characteristics of the periods after the fall of the Roman Empire to the Baroque. Issues will be discussed in chronological order: Early Christianity, Bizanz, Carolingians, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque. The discussion will focus on key structures and monuments from Western Europe and the Near East, in their historical, cultural and artistic contexts, and on future relevance of the ideological and aesthetic approaches of these seventeen centuries.
