Course description

The terms "classical ballet" or "modern dance" conjure pretty clear pictures of dance forms, while "contemporary dance" evokes a maze of images, reflecting the 'moving boundaries' of contemporary dance, which is a key trait of the changes dance practices have undergone since the closing decades of the last century. By breaking established dance forms, contemporary dance practitioners have continually altered and re-created the dancing bodies and their dance expressions, as a means to look at and criticize dance qualities and cultural values. In the seminar, we will focus on this vital trait of contemporary dance with the aim to study its various manifestations and the diverse ways it relates to socio-cultural issues.
