Course description

Course description

The claim that various representations in culture, including works of art, construct rather than reflect reality, has gained a hold in contemporary theoretical criticism. This claim is tightly interwoven with questions that have a long intellectual history concerning the issue of truth and representation in the arts. Central aesthetic concepts such as realism, constructivism, conventionalism, illusionism, pluralism, language and metalanguage, etc., find their way into these philosophical debates and demand a special examination.

The course will follow the discourse on the link between truth and representation, beginning with Aristotle in the ancient world, and encompassing the theory of worlds that developed toward the end of the 20th century.

The aim of the course is to provide a conceptual background to the understanding of several issues concerning the relations between truth and representation in the arts, and their particular expressions in the different areas of the arts.
