Course description

This course offers a study of Israeli Television- its texts and contexts- as a site for identity negotiations and as a unique case study of television culture in both global and local/national contexts. The course uses theoretical and methodological tools for the cultural study of television as a medium and repertory of cultural  texts- its aesthetics, formats, genres, contexts of production and reception, ideological and discursive articulations. Examining Israeli TV as a site for identity discourse- the seminar focuses on topics such as gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, immigration, history and collective memory, discursive spaces such as the military, the kibbutz, domestic vs. public sphere, center vs. periphery, and the ideological connotations produced and negotiated in these discursive televisual sites.
