Course description

Since the late 1960s, American filmmakers started to document their own lives and identities. This was a major turn from the “traditional” documentary, which is most often used to capture the lives of others. The seminar will look at the ways in which autobiographical documentaries raise weighty questions about culture, gender, race and class. We will also examine the differences between “I movies” and related autobiographical forms such as the home movie and written autobiography.
