It puts emphasis on the Polish School and the new wave of Czech cinema during the Prague Spring and the way filmmakers in both countries referred in their works to the trauma of Nazi occupation and the censorship imposed on them during the Soviet regime. Among the filmmakers whose films are dealt in the course are Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Poland) Milos Forman, Jiri Menzel, Vera Chytilova (Czechoslovakia), Miklos Jancso (Hungary) and Andrei Tarkovski (USSR).
