Course description
The course maps Israeli documentaries – both historically and thematically. The starting point is the Zionist realism – the films of Nathan Axelrod, Baruch Agadati and Helmar lerski who documented early pioneering project in Palestine. We then focus on the emergence of modernist documentary filmmaking – most notably, the films of David Perlov and David Greenberg, the critical and radical documentaries produced during the first decades of Israeli television, the changes occurred due to the founding of Channel 2 and the New Israeli Foundation for Cinema and TV in 1993, culminating with the awards winning animated documentary, Waltz with Bashir.
