The course introduces major milestones in the development of documentary cinema, significant filmmakers, modes, functions and trends. It examines different attitudes regarding the nature of documentary film, and deals with the aesthetic and ethical differences between fiction and non-fiction films. It also introduces and analyses some of the prominent documentary films made in the United States, Europe, South America and the Middle East.
