Course description

Queer Theory and Film
This course examines representations of sexual orientation in popular cinema, using classical and contemporary mainstream films. The course will trace the complex relationship between gay and lesbian studies and cinema studies since the early days of positive/negative images of gay film criticism to recent developments in queer film theory. The class is divided into three parts: the first part critically introduces queer concepts and debates such as performativity and film spectatorship, heterocentrism and heteronormatively, the concept of the gay closet, male homosocial desire, complexities of gender identifications and transactions. The second part explores queer narrative, genre, authorship and aesthetics. The third part focuses on issues of race, nationalism and postcolonialism in relation to queer filmic imagery.
