Course description
"Cinematography for Directors" is a course about visual thinking, about the way a director, as the prime translator of the film script and as head of the film's creative unit, is chiefly responsible to the creation of the visual style of the film. The course will analyze different visual styles through the differences between objective and subjective photography, the use of point of view in cinematography, the meaning and use of lightning and color in the creation of the film space and characterization, the importance of visual preproduction through the use of shooting drafts and storyboards. The course will also deal with the growing changes in the visual styles of narrative and documentary filmmaking and the idea, now-days, of the crumbling of visual borders between genres. During the course, some classes will focus on certain directors and analyze some of their works in order to emphasize the growth and development of a personal visual style.
