Course description

Basics in Cinematography and Production
Course Given by: Mr. Tom Goldwasser
I Course Objective:
The workshop will talk about the basics of being a cinematographer. We will talk about the
history of the moving image, the basics of camera controls, light, and how we use it to tell a
story. We will talk about the teamwork and interactions with other departments on the set, how
do we operate together?
Who does what?
The course will be spoken through the eyes of the cinematographer.
II Course Plan:
Lesson 1: a. Presentation of the course objectives. What is video?
Film, what material is made of, how do we make it a reality?

Lesson 2 + 3: Basic photographic equipment and lenses

Tripod - Types of tripods and their use (position, leveling, leveling).
Camera - Body Camera:.
Operational functions: ZEBRA, shutter / shutter, white balance, filters
Sharpness (focus) - Focus control: manual, automatic.
Focal length - Lens types: wide, narrow, tele, zoom and prime.
Aperture. Proper exposure, exposure, and overexposure. Using the ND filter.
Depth of field - field depth control.
Watching exercises
Lesson # 4 + 5: Lighting Steps for Photography
Types of lights. Basic concepts, classical lighting, one-point lighting, diffusers and colors.
Natural lighting and artificial lighting. Natural lighting: use of daylight, photography at different
times. Artificial lighting
Basic use of lights, Key, Fill, Back,
Direct / Indirect Light, Spot / Flood, Light Color, Flags: gobos, diffusion, Mesh.
Use home lighting.
Law 180 degrees
Lesson 6 + 7: The Cinematographers work with a director and key figures in the production.
The work of the Cinematographer from when he receives a script until the completion of the
work.
The decisions related to framing the shot: the angle of photography, the construction of the
Shooting Script, Breakdown, Floorplan
Working with different directors.
The role of Cinematographer on the team.
Key People in production - Producer, Executive Producer, Director, Art and how the
