Course description
In this course we’ll get ourselves acquainted with the musical language of the Indian subcontinent. After we describe the development of Indian music and its central role in the religious culture, we’ll get deeper into the musical structure and its significance. The theoretical introduction will include getting familiar with ragas structure (the melodic aspect) rhythmic cycles (talas) and practical experience. During the course we’ll get to know the musical instruments unique to Indian music, such as sitar, bansuri and tabla, and listen to the major artists of the domain. Finally we’ll concentrate in the analysis of two or three masterpieces through which we’ll get deeper familiarity with this infinitely rich world.
