Course description
The course will focus on manuscript studies, codicology and the study of manuscripts as artifacts. We shall look at musical riddles as found in numerous manuscripts and investigate the significance of musical amusements within the broader culture of the Renaissance. Special emphasis will be given to early modern motets as a vehicle for transforming social and political messages, and investigate the notation and repertory associated with the Ars subtilior as a manifestation of profound cultural changes and reorganization of human consciousness.
